Weight loss surgery helps patients to achieve consistent, long term weight loss. However, medical evidence points to the fact that weight loss surgery, such as lap band surgery, gastric sleeve surgery and gastric bypass surgery, are effective in reducing obese patients’ risks of a number of serious obesity-related conditions.
Scientific studies are increasingly showing that weight loss surgery is about more than just losing weight and looking and feeling better. Weight loss surgery is shown to ease diabetes, ease joint conditions and help reduce heart risks. A new study gives further evidence that weight loss surgery could help to prevent heart failure.
In the first ever study specifically looking at the effect of weight loss surgery on the risk of heart failure; results suggested that weight loss surgery could cut your long term risks in half.
Researchers looked at 2,010 obese people who had weight loss surgery between 1987 and 2001 when they were between 37 and 60 years old. These individuals were then match to 2,037 obese people who had not had weight loss surgery.
The average weight loss in the 14.7 years studied was 18% in those who had undergone weight loss surgery and 1% in the control group, who had not had surgery. In the follow up time, 91 of the weight loss surgery patients were diagnosed with heart failure, compared to 152 members of the control group.
These figures suggest that undergoing weight loss surgery, such as lap band surgery, gastric sleeve surgery or gastric bypass surgery, can directly reduce an obese person’s risk of developing heart failure by as much as 48%.
