Weight loss surgery might be the best treatment for obese patients who have type 2 diabetes, according to new research from Italy published in the Archives of Surgery. The study found that weight loss surgery improved diabetes outcomes compared to patients who had the standard drug therapy for the condition.

With positive results for weight loss surgery, one doctor made the point that patients must work with their medical practitioners to determine if weight loss surgery is right for them and if they are ready and willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes for the surgery to be a success.

“There are a variety of treatments available in terms of altering the GI tract,” says Dr. Gerald Bernstein, director of the Diabetes Management Program at the Friedman Diabetes Institute at New York’s Beth Israel Medical Center.

It is vital for primary care physicians, surgeons  and endocrinologists to collaborate to decide which Type 2 diabetes patients would benefit the most from these weight loss surgeries.

“Doctors need to be sure they find patients who will make this surgery worthwhile,” said Bernstein. “If you’re going to do something like this that significantly changes the body, you need to make sure they have the motivation to follow doctor’s recommendations.”

“Right now, this is another tool and option in the arsenal for diabetes treatment,” he added.
