In 2013, the United States government shutdown due to disagreement in congress on the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obama Care. Before and after the government shut down people were looking for other means of affordable care.  ABC News did a piece on a man and a women who worked for companies that looked elsewhere for employee care and ended up saving big.

Joy Guion was suffering from chronic obesity and Gary Harwell was living with constant knee pain. ABC documented their journey going abroad to receive this care. HSM, the company that sent Guion and Harwell abroad for care reported,

Outsourcing medical care has saved it nearly $10 million in health care costs over the past five years, according to the company. Close to 250 of its employees have traveled abroad so far for medical care, and more are scheduled to go.”

In the piece ABC looks at what exactly HMS is saving in the case of Harwell and Guion.

“In the United States, Harwell’s knee replacement would have cost more than $50,000. In Costa Rica, it costs half that amount at $23,531. In North Carolina, Guion’s gastric sleeve surgery would have cost about $30,000, but in Costa Rica, it comes to $17,386. Both were placed in pristine rooms in state-of-the-art hospitals.”
