166767890Many of us have made New Year’s resolutions. Some may have stuck to them; some of us may have slipped back into our old habits. Regardless of whether you have managed to quit smoking or drinking, lose weight or join the gym, by adding this simple and cheap drink into your daily routine you could lose weight, lower your blood sugar levels and even prevent diabetes.

According to the World Health Organization, being overweight by one pound, ten pounds or fifty pounds, can have a serious impact on your health, making you more likely to suffer from diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. The humble trio lemon, honey and cinnamon could help. All known to promote weight loss, combined they can help you to regulate blood sugar levels and even promote weight loss.

Honey

Myth: Honey is mostly sugar so should be avoided when you’re trying to lose weight.

Honey does contain a lot of sugar, however it’s not the same as table sugar and as a result it affects our bodies differently when we eat it.  One study showed that obese patients who had 70 grams of honey they lost weight, body fat and saw a drop in cholesterol level, inflammation and triglyceride levels compare to subjects who were given sugar. Other studies show that honey could aid weight loss as well as preventing weight gain and lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Honey is much better than sugar, so where possible swap sugar for honey. However, be aware that it is still high in sugar so should be eaten with caution if you have diabetes.

Cinnamon

When it comes to its benefits for us, cinnamon is much more than a tasty addition when you are cooking. According to studies, cinnamon reduces inflammation, increases the rate that insulin metabolizes sugar, reduces blood pressure and stops cancer cells from growing. Other studies show that, when consumed over a period of 12 or more weeks, daily ingestion of 500 milligrams of cinnamon can aid weight loss and improve lean body mass.

Add a sprinkling of cinnamon to your oatmeal, salads and hot drinks to help regulate blood sugar levels, stave of hunger and reduce blood pressure.

Lemon

Lemons are packed with polyphenols, antioxidant compounds that are shown to reduce inflammation and prevent cancer. One study showed that, when consumed over a 12 week period, a daily lemon dose can help to suppress weight gain and even help weight loss whilst reducing blood sugar levels.

It’s As Easy As One Two Three

Add lemon honey and cinnamon to your tea or green tea, or simply combine the juice of half a lemon with a tablespoon of honey and a teaspoon of cinnamon. If you prefer, you can steep cinnamon sticks in hot water for 5 minutes as an alternative to powdered cinnamon.

If you have had weight loss surgery, or are losing weight in preparation for weight loss surgery such as a gastric lap band, gastric sleeve or gastric bypass, adding this hot drink to your daily routine twice a day will help you to maintain your weight loss as well as help to keep your blood sugar levels even, preventing hunger pangs.
