175576457Losing weight can be hard. Rewarding? Yes. Exciting? Definitely; but hard just the same. As new research shows that meditation could help to improve heart health, as well as help us to fight conditions such as cancer and diabetes, we look at evidence that suggests that you could meditate to lose weight.

This doesn’t mean that sitting with your hands on your knees and your eyes closed will suddenly make you slim. But if you are prone to binging, or eat in order to help you cope with stressful situations, thinking about what you are eating and meditation to help you to cope with stress, cravings and to help you make the best food decisions can definitely help.

Our relationships with food are complex; some of us snack, some of us binge. Some starve to help them feel in control, whist others hit the chocolate and chips at the first sign of stress. Some people just really like food, so eat more than their bodies need. This causes them to gain weight. It might seem like a crazy idea, but a new study shows that meditation, or “mindful eating” could help with weight loss. And here’s how:

  • By eating slowly and thinking about every mouthful you are giving your stomach time to tell your brain that you are full. It can take 20 minutes for your brain to get the message that your stomach is full. In this time, you could have had another helping, or hit the desserts. The slower you eat, the less likely you are to keep eating way after your stomach is full.
  • With each mouthful we eat our sensitivity to the flavors of that food goes down. By chewing slowly and really thinking about the food that you eat you will allow yourself to enjoy your food more, enjoy every flavor, and to notice when the flavor starts to reduce. This will help you to understand when you are eating because you’re hungry or enjoying something, or you are just eating food because it is there.
  • Meditation can help you to reduce your cravings for food. It can make you understand your cravings and even realize the emotions associated with them. Through meditation, you could deal with the cravings and, over time, reduce your cravings, instead of feeding your cravings with food.
  • Stress makes most people want to eat. This is because stress triggers cortisol, a hormone that can lead to pre-diabetes and obesity, and can stimulate the appetite.
